My Relationship With Technology In One's Everyday Life

Technology Tsunami
The 21st century is one filled with technology.  Whether it be on our phones, computers, television or on the radio, we are surrounded by technology.  We live in a world that would not know what to do without it.  Think about it, without things, videos, the news, etc., what would people do?  Essentially, nothing.  We would be lost.  However, with technology advancing the way it has, how do we survive in it?

Being a 90's baby, I was not introduced to technology until the early 2000's, but even then technology was not where it is today.  As we get older, the more technology advances and the more people have to learn.  Even from a simple upgrade for an iPhone can be challenging.  One thing that many can agree on is the frustration that it can cause.  Hostility can rise in a household if the wifi shuts off or even the power cutting off.  We sit on our hands and look around wondering what we are supposed to do.  That means that the household actually has to talk to one another without their phones in front of their faces.  But who wants to live back in the 50's with no iPhones, laptops, wifi, etc?  Not I, but there are some things that I would change.

Lack of Communication
One thing that I do in the field of communications is I am a public speaker.  I go to public schools, rotary clubs and other organizations/fundraisers and raise awareness for my platform, helping others manage emotional stress.  This is something I am passionate about, but something I have noticed is that there are so many little kids who have an iPhone.  On top of that, they are watching and listening to media that is outside of their age group.  Why is this?  It is because we live in a world where everything is just a click away.  We are teaching the next generations that face-to-face communication is not relevant, and that face-timing is, when that is not the case.  Do I believe technology is important, digital technology to be exact, absolutely, but there is a limit we need to reach.

Stepping further and further into the future I realize that yes, there is a digital tsunami upon us, but we can survive it and gain back our face-to-face communication skills again, but how is the question. By taking Professor Williams Digital Mythology class, I plan to learn where we advanced in such a largely based technological world and how to gain back some communication skills we may have lost along the way.
